Liberal Arts Out Now!

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Liberal Arts is released in limited US theaters today (September 14th) and Zac “is a little secret in the movie“! Although you may not have heard of the film as Zac has not been involved in promotion, he plays a cameo-role as Nat, whom director Josh Radnor describes as a “weird, mystical, spirit guide, “jimminy cricket” figure, who just pops up on campus at the weird moments“.

If you want a sense of the movie itself, be sure to check out a TV interview with Josh below, which features a clip of Zac as he speaks (ZA Note: Zac features from 1.24-1.44) and another interview with Josh above where he discusses Zac’s role in the movie in depth as well as Zac’s personality, how he came to be a part of the movie and more.

Tickets for screenings are available at Moviefone and Fandango, but be sure to check out your local theater too. Did you go on opening day? Let us know your thoughts on the movie, if you’ve seen it, in the poll below and share your experience in the comments!

Liberal Arts at London Sundance

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Liberal Arts will get its UK premiere at the first London Sundance Film Festival . The four day festival is being held at the O2 Arena in London from April 26 – April 29th and 14 independent films will be shown during the event.

This Is London reports:

Among them is Liberal Arts, the new film featuring Martha Marcy May Marlene star Elizabeth Olsen, which received a standing ovation at Sundance, a festival usually too cool to allow such things.

We’re so excited that Liberal Arts is getting such great reviews and this is fabulous exposure for it in the UK. For more details on the event, check out Sundance London’s website!

Liberal Arts at Sundance

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Liberal Arts premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this week at the Eccles Theater in Utah. Both screenings of the film received a standing ovation at the end and there was also a Q&A with director Josh Radnor. Zac’s part had very positive reviews:

@SlashFilm – And Zac Efron had a small role in the movie and steals the show. I really hate myself for typing this tweet.

@Ethan_Anderton – Liberal Arts has hokey fortune cookie wisdom but in an irresistibly charming and entertaining package. Zac Efron steals the show.

Very excitingly, ScreenDaily is reporting:

The deal was poised to close on Wednesday evening for one of the most popular titles of the festival to date, a coming-of-age tale written and directed by Josh Radnor who also stars alongside Elizabeth Olsen. IFC plans a theatrical release in the top 20 markets later this year

Although Zac only plays a small role, it will be great to see him on screen again in 2012!

Liberal Arts at Sundance Festival

Monday, December 5th, 2011

The Sundance Institute announced the films for the “Out of Competition Premieres” section of the festival which “ showcases some of the most highly anticipated dramatic films of the coming year from new and established directors” and Liberal Arts has made the shortlist! It will be showcased in a world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival which takes place in Utah in January 2012.

Liberal Arts / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Josh Radnor) — When 30-something Jesse is invited back to his alma mater, he falls for a 19-year-old college student and is faced with the powerful attraction that springs up between them. Cast: Josh Radnor, Elizabeth Olsen, Richard Jenkins, Allison Janney, John Magaro, Elizabeth Reaser.”

Although Zac does not have a main role in this movie, we’re really excited that its been picked up by such a prestigious festival and can’t wait to see what part he does play!

Liberal Arts Article

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

The Kenyon Collegian have published a great article on the production of Liberal Arts which took place on their campus earlier this summer. Check out a preview below and be sure to read the full article which contains lots more info HERE.

“I heard rumors that Zac Efron was coming on the first day I started working, which was about a week and a half before shooting,” Arbery said. “I was not allowed to mention him at all. We didn’t want extras coming just because Zac Efron was in it. We didn’t want them to tell their friends and bring cameras and spoil the quiet, concentrated set.”

Efron’s “Nat” is “a pivotal character in the movie,” according to Radnor. The High School Musical star was on campus from June 17-18 and completed all his scenes in that time. Most Kenyon students (and visiting OSU students) saw Efron during the filming of the party scene in the DKE lounge in the Old Kenyon basement, which required many extras.

“One night I had to get 80 extras for an Old Kenyon party scene, and when the Second Assistant Director came in and told them that Zac Efron was coming, there was a collective gasp and then a flurry of whispers,” Arbery said.

“[Efron] was walking by, getting ready to do another take, and he winked right at me,” Kaitlin Graff ’12 said. “I’ve been working on my winking ever since so the next time I see him I’ll be ready.”
